WHAT BEING A BLACK BELT MEANS TO ME?
I joined taekwondo 4 years ago. The reason why I joined taekwondo is because I wanted to learn how to defend myself. As I got closer to being a black belt, I realized that taekwondo is not just about kicking and punching. Taekwondo is about the 5 tenets which are integrity, courtesy, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.

Being a black belt also makes me feel more responsible because being a black belt gives me a bigger responsibility – like leading the class, serving others and cleaning up the gym. By leading the class, I will lead stretching. By serving others, I will make sure that the little ones eat first by serving them first before me. By cleaning the gym, I will clean up the younger children’s messes.
In taekwondo, I have to follow the 5 tenets of taekwondo. That means I have to have courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. But I do not just do the 5 tenets at taekwondo, I also do it at home. I have to set up a good example by teaching the younger kids the 5 tenets of taekwondo, and teach them how to be responsible by teaching them to clean up after themselves, and encouraging the kids to do something, and make them feel good by saying something that makes them proud of themselves.
